Elevating Digital Art at the Comox Valley Art Gallery

The LED display in the Comox Valley Art Gallery’s Window Media Gallery, facing the plaza in Courtenay, British Columbia.

Project details

  • Client: Comox Valley Art Gallery
  • Location: Courtenay, British Columbia
  • Project type: Digital Experience
  • Display size: 12′ × 7′
  • Technology: Unilumin Uslim 3.9mm pixel pitch LED wall and 65Cubed CubePro system

The Goal

The Comox Valley Art Gallery (CVAG) aimed to transform its facility into a dynamic, co-production hub. The cornerstone of this vision was the installation of a large-scale LED wall in the Window Media Gallery—a display designed to face outward onto the plaza, bridging the gap between indoor exhibition and outdoor public space.

The challenge

Installing high-fidelity display technology in a high-traffic, outdoor-facing window presented unique technical constraints:

  • Color Integrity: Digital art demands absolute precision. Standard LED walls often alter color profiles, which can diminish an artist’s original intent.
  • Glare Mitigation: Facing an outdoor plaza meant the system had to compete with daylight, direct sunlight, and environmental glare of glass to remain readable.
  • Dual-Perspective Viewing: The content needed to be sharp for viewers inside the gallery hallway while remaining equally engaging for passersby in the plaza.
  • Reliability: As a public-facing institution, the gallery required technology with near-perfect uptime to ensure exhibits remained uninterrupted.

The approach

BoomBright delivered a precision-engineered solution tailored to the rigorous standards of a contemporary art gallery:

  • High-Brightness Display: We implemented a 12′ x 7′ Unilumin Uslim 3.9mm pixel pitch LED wall. With 4500 nits of brightness, the display is robust enough to overcome extreme glare and remain visible in direct sunlight.
  • Real-Time Calibration: To ensure the integrity of the artwork, we integrated a 65Cubed CubePro color correction system. This allows for real-time calibration, ensuring the colors displayed on the LED wall remain true to the artist’s original color profile.
  • Adaptive Environment: A built-in light sensor detects ambient light conditions, automatically adjusting the display’s brightness levels in real-time to maintain optimal performance from dawn until dusk.
  • Immersive Infrastructure: The project was completed with an eight-channel exterior audio system, providing a full multimedia experience for visitors. Audio integrated by others.

The Impact

Since the project’s completion in 2023, the Comox Valley Art Gallery has successfully bolstered its capacity to serve as a co-production facility and a hub for digital creation. The installation has become a vital asset for their exhibition schedule, allowing the gallery to present complex, immersive digital works to both the local community and visitors.
